Cobra gas caps and Chrome or black?

New topic,
The gas caps in the photo poster of the car are chrome, but in the first movie they are black. Also the centerline rims look like they are metalic, but a smokey black chrome. And the nose is silver in the promo photo, but not the movie. I read all of the back topics and didn't find anything about this.
Do they sell those caps in a black finish, or did they just spray paint the chrome? Centerline sells wheels that are satin finish, but I am sure they are silver, not smokey like those tires.
And why the change?
ANy old stories on that? It's similar to the "white fuzzy pinstripe" shots we have of the 66, when Barris delivered it and the studio made changes.
Anyone have the DL?
nate
I think it's nice to have a few chrome touches like in the poster shot!

I don't think the caps were ever chrome, it looks like lighting glow. The pics I have (of this same car) show the caps to be the same dark gold/silver color as the rims and some of the side plumbing. It almost has an smoke/ bronze anodized look that was on the 1989 car only and stood out against the greenish/ blue pearl black body. For Returns, the rims got darker and the caps became black (as did the car).

I'm sure Jack has pics that show all this...

Dave, good to see you here again my man. Would Warners keep a file record on the original paint scheme i.e. how many coats (20 if memory serves) and tone of said paint. I would kind of liked the Onstar car to be returned to it's former glory one day.

RE: Cobra gas caps and Chrome or black?

WB kept horrible records of the 1989 Batmobile. Trying to find people in England was also a problem. In the end I spoke to many people and got lots of great stories but that was about it. The deal with the 89 paint was that they had no paint formula and just winged it with layers of pearl and metallic. The car ended up looking really foggy as a result and Burton and company weren't thrilled. I ended up getting a paint chip in the mail from England but when we matched the 1/18 paint to it...it looked like crap. Wish I could help more but in the end a semi-gloss black looks best. If you want to get close to the 89...add some green and blue pearl to a semi-gloss clear and spray that over the black.

BTW, one of the production guys in England told me they constantly wiped vaseline on parts of the body to get certain highlights Burton was after. This is why the car looks like it's different sheens all over. Same as in some scenes in Returns.

I talked to a guy a couple of years ago who worked for Hollywood Productions. He used to maintain the show cars and did the multi-colored paint jobs. He explained the process in detail. Now if I could only find that email...

Do you still have that paint chip to get the exact color? Not that I would use it, but more for historical reasons.

So did they paint a smoke over the chrome caps and rims?

RE: Cobra gas caps and Chrome or black?

What I heard was that it depended on whoever was working in the paintshop on a particular day.
They used the same paints, but mix ratios were not constant.
Don't really know if that matters at all, but it seems personal preference came into play.
AND of course, what kind of mood Tim Burton was in on the day of filming the car.
