RE: gocart
Maybe after you glassed over the balsa and removed the body from the car you could sand the inside the same as you did the outside and then glass over the inside as well. This should be pretty strong and as long as you don't go overboard with the glass and resin, it should be fairly light too.

RE: gocart
I didn't mean remove the balsa, just shape it smooth and remove any of the unnessesary pieces.

RE: gocart
yup,I think it just might work, that stuff is so easy to sand and shape, and it glues easy, and its light, you can get it in big blocks or sheets, cut to size.

The blue foam is great too, but it's not compatible with polyester resin. You have to cover it with some sort of barrier first. I'm doing mine differently though. I am making something that I will pull molds from then it gets destroyed (most likely when I remove the molds ).

RE: gocart
have u tryed this method before, it sounds intrusting, but i would have though giving the softness of the blasawood the fiberglass gelcoat would crack if it even got hit, anytime i wanted balsa wood to have a nice surrface i always just applyed a coupple layers of primer sanding after each layer till i got a nic coat, then used automtoive paint, along wtih wet sanding and clear coat. but giving the size ur looking at id just lay some fiberglass cloth on the top.

RE: gocart
no,I dont think it would crack, if you spray a couple of coats of gel coat, and then lay up underneath the complete shell ,Im going to give it a try.

RE: gocart
ur gonna lay the fiberglass under the balsawood after carving the inside out right? beucase all ym exapreance with gel caot without the fiberglass backing it up its weak (backing it up as in applyed directly 2 it), laying it on the basawood if it got hit it could crack, or even somone jsut attempting to stand on it it might crack.

RE: gocart
No, he said that he was going to "spray a couple of coats of gel coat, and then lay up underneath the complete shell". Gel coat is basically just paint and would easily crack if not reinforced.
I think you would be very surprised at how strong a piece of 1/2" balsa is sandwiched between two thin layers of fiberglass.
