BTTF Delorean
i just had back to the future trilogy marathon last night and by coincidence I see this interesting ad on top
what's everyone's consensus on BTTF delorean? And do you have one, Paul?
If my dream of owning 89 can't come true, then i wouldn't mind owning a BTTF Delorean.

RE: BTTF Delorean
I love the Back to the Future movies!!!
I liked the car and did a lot of research into possibly buying a Delorean. Then I saw a real one on the road and how small and uninteresting(?) it looked without the time machine parts.
My interest died that day. Probably a good thing too. Otherwise you'd see Delorean up there instead of 89.

RE: BTTF Delorean
i love the movie and the car, but i wont own one, if i bought one i would have to convert it, and id rather just not have the need to drill a bunch of holes though a stainless steel body.

RE: BTTF Delorean
i have one and its a good car but and i wouldnt want to put holes in it. but when i take it out the people still say (thats the car they used i bttf ) but if you were to get one get a good running one. and dont worry about the inside looks and you could get a good deal . your going to tear it up anyway and it would be cheaper to make it into a bttf car than restore it

RE: BTTF Delorean
A place about 30 miles away had a mint one I looked at buying 5 years ago. Great car and a great price. I also did a lot of research and I ran across a guy who did the whole conversion. He was very upfront that there is usually a good deal of work that you have to do just to get a car that old up to everyday driving shape. And as you can imagine, parts and mechanics aren;t that easy to come by. There is a great De Lorean shop in Texas that he took his to and he had to have a LOT done. Converting it into a movie car didn;t seem like it would be that tough. I've often thought it'd be a fun car to do as well. Certainly easier than an 89. But, I need that $$$ saved up for the 89

RE: BTTF Delorean
Of course!!!!
I live in Bridgewater. Home of John Delorean. The first Delorean dealership was right next to Bridgewater High-school West and my bus passed that place every day going to school. It was an awesome sight, a least a hundred Deloreans all parked next to each other. A few of them in color, but most of them were identical. Looked like a dealership with only one type and color car in it.
Also looked like a Miami car rental lot at the airport. Several hundred white compact cars.
You'll see his autograph in the background of the last TunerGirlz pic on the "Paul" thread. He was buying a barbeque grill a few summers ago and I ripped a sale tag off one and got him to sign it for me. Most of my BTTF props are on display at Star Cars, but you'll see some other stuff in the background of that pic. That used to be my BTTF wall at the shop.
But Deloreans used to be real cheap in this town. Most of the kids got one for grad back then. I bought my last one for only 5 grand.
I had one that flys...
One that drives...
Drilling the holes is no big deal actually. The hard part is taking a hammer to the quarter windows. My first few hits had the hammer bouncing off because I was trying to be "nice" to the car.
And of course, the bikes...
I had the original Griffmobile BMW 633 SI for awhile too. People who came to the shop always thought it was a custom Mustang because of the huge Harwood hood scoop.
I'll edit this post tomorrow night (don't have pics of it at the shop) and add a pic of that. (Sorry guys, no girls on that pic, it was sold before it was restored, so you'll have to hit www.bttfbmw.com to see what it looks like till tomorrow night.)
I also had one of the Ford probes. Sold it... still have an extra windshield hanging around and some other parts.
I did the restoration of the BTTF2 Hovertaxi that's owned by the guy who runs BTTF.com . The car was in really bad shape after some tornados that ripped through Universal Florida several years ago. Light rack was smashed, wheel covers busted up, antenna array destroyed. Was fun and really looks great today. Still have the molds if anyone needs futuristic taxi parts. (Again, no digital pics at the shop. Hundreds of stills here, but no scanner)
Been wanting that Police Hover car for the longest time. Still haven't cut a deal with the guy who owns it, but I will. The museum in Branson MO that is baby-sitting my helicopter is also sitting on the molds. He just called wanting a driveable 89 so that police car might be in my future.
One last BTTF thing...
My Toyota JP6 was in BTTF2...
It's parked down the street, facing away from the camera, when old Biff takes off with the flying Delorean.
So that's technically a Back to the Future car.
I'm doing some custom work to it and painting it dark charcoal (favorite color next to black) so it won't look like a BTTF car for long.

RE: BTTF Delorean
Yep,
I've owned 4 out of the 5 screen used cars. The remaining one is for sale in Ohio, but it's the jump car on a dune buggy chassis and is really a mess. He wants to sell it for the value of the COA. So in theory. you could cut it up, move the parts to a regular VW and STILL have an original car with docs.
I've been thinking about buying it just to be able to say; "I've owned all of them!" But not worth the time and cash right now.
I have one here at the shop that we've built for a client in Switzerland.
You just get a Manta Montage, cut it up, add the custom Coyote parts and monza tail lights and re-mount the doors and pull off the back window.
Not too hard, but a cool looking car.
Need one Rusty.

RE: BTTF Delorean
The coyote always reminded me of a 70's Le Mans car, hardly as groundbreaking a design as the pilot episode made it out to be. I have to say it though I used to love the show... well until Streethawk, Airwolf and especially Knight Rider came along and kicked it to the kerb.

RE: BTTF Delorean
Since this started out as a Delorean thread...
Here's a pic of the Coyote that was made from a Delorean for the second season when Brian Keith refused to return unless he was given a car with actual DOORS!
Here's the one I got from Jay that was used in the opening credits where it crashes. If you check out that Planet Hollywood post, you'll see the wreckage in the background of my pic of the 50 Merc. The damaged front end was replaced with the front clip from the Knight Rider 4000 car and a 6 foot WB Tazmanian Devil was added to the back deck and this car became "The TAZ Car".
Here's the one that's for sale...
And here's why I DON'T keep a Coyote for myself...
I don't fit in the damn things!
But I've never heard of one being stolen from the set. I HAVE heard that the jump car was "stolen" from the lot. This is not true but it WAS sold out the back door from the Universal Florida backlot. They were just tired of looking at it.

As long as this has sort of morphed into a show cars thread, does anyone know if the A team Van was also sold off of the backlot. I remember seeing it sitting years ago when I was at Universal on a tour.

RE: BTTF Delorean
Yep...
I bought it. Along with the Death Race 2000 Sterling, the Griffmobile and the probe.
Jeff from BTTF.com got the taxi at the same sale.
I rolled the Van to the Star Cars Museum in England.
No girlie pics. sorry. This was a direct shipment from the seller to England and I sent Sharp and one of my friends to take pics for me before it got hauled to Long Beach pier. Star Cars has two more toys to be delivered. The last one I'm taking over personally, so I'll shoot some current A-Team van pics then. I'm taking a TG or two so maybe we'll get some local girls to join in and well make up a new all chick "A-team" for the photo. (Would that be "The T&A-Team" then?)

That is too sweet. I used to think you were just this amazingly talented super lucky guy. Now I think your an amazingly talented amazingly lucky guy who's owned almost every sweet vehicle at one time or another. I may have to put togther an A-team van some day. Just to haul parts for the 89 build... Who bought the BTTF part 3 delorean in the pic above? I don;t suppose you've owned the streethawk cycle or maybe Airwolf?

RE: BTTF Delorean
Matt, the sticker on the Delorean was 20K. Waaaay too much for a car in that condition. Don't know if it sold. But I do know that the pink caddy didn't and is still on the lot. The Delorean might still be as well.
I got a deal on the van, the cost was a little over 5K. Didn't run... was a stunt van with the engine in the middle for jumps. Real ratty inside. I had my friend from LA who took the second photo remove the spare wheel you can see in the corner of the photo. It's still at his house, I'm gonna put a piece of glass over it and use it for a coffee table.
As for the Street Hawk... I'd like to say "YES" but the deal went bad and I never got it.
There was only one bike. Built on a Honda dirt bike. It was purchased by a Knight Rider replica builder in Orlando.
Through a mutual friend, I found out that he purchased the molds for the Knight 4000 but didn't have an original dash for it or an original single screen 4th season dash. I loaned them to him as well as an original hubcap from the Clooney Batmobile. As I was going to be purchasing the Street Hawk from him, this was another instance of my "taking care of my friends" and I let him pull molds from them to be able to offer replicas to his clients.
To make this short, he refused to return them and I drove down there to collect my property after one year. Then... he refused to return them to my face.
WRONG ANSWER!!!!!
I made a phone call and had his Knight 4000 molds confiscated from his storage facility.
He gave my dashes up pretty quickly after that. But swung at me with one of them.
THAT... ended my chances of buying the Street Hawk and he sold it on eBay for 15 grand to a buyer in the U.K.
When the show was still on the air, I considered making one and purchased the closest vehicle I could find for a donor. That was a 1981 Yamaha Vision. I drove it around for a few years, never got around to cutting it up. But I never sold it.
Amusingly enough...
It happens to be the very same bike we're cutting up on TunerGirlz to make the TunerBat bike. You can see the similarities in the photo below.
As for the Airwolf.
It was stripped of it's custom parts...
then sold from the studio to a German Rescue service and it crashed in the mountains on a return flight from a successful mission.
There was a stunt chopper that was eventually painted as "Red Wolf" for the final season. It survives and has been repainted as Air Wolf and is still quite enjoyed by its owner.
I get offered the original spare parts to convert a Bell 223 at least once a year.
Silent Bob used to collect prototypes and military mockup aircraft and he came into posession of a cool looking helicopter and Universal came to him to rent it for the revival of Air Wolf. We called it "Airwolf II" and I'm sure Mark remembers this vehicle well.
I wanted to buy it for years and Bob eventually GAVE it to me when he was cleaning house. Transport problems caused me to leave it there too long and Bob trashed it along with the molds to make more.
My loss...
These days, the only chopper I have is the remains of the Magnum P.I. TC chopper.
It's in bad shape, but I'll get around to cleaning it up eventually. It will never fly again, but it's gonna make a cool lawn ornament. I'm gonna mock up a helipad with blue lights and a wind sock on the front lawn when it's finished and freak out the neighbors.

RE: BTTF Delorean
Amazing. It's simply crazy that any tv or film vehicle I can think of you've owned, own, or know exactly what happened to it. It's a shame about the airwolf deal, that would have also been a cool lawn ornament. I heard they had plenty of crashing problems during filming as well. The TC chopper is sweet though. When you tell people to come over, you won;t have to say - "mine is the third house on the right, the white one", you can say "I'm on XX street - just drive till you see the chopper in the front yard."
Thanks for the pics and info! So, what's the "TunerGirlz show"?

The DeLorean in this shot is owned by a guy who works at a DeLorean dealership here in California, it is SWEET! Flux capacitor, Mr. Fusion, the works! A serious bang up job!
(Star car update, found a KITT! I want to get at least 6 cars together the next meet!)
Now that's a car show!

RE: BTTF Delorean
Awesome!!!
Looks like my driveway.
How come you guys never ask me about the Torino???
I actually got this one off a guy in town who's brother was my high-school auto shop lab partner.
Got it for $6500.00 . It's a screen used car from the original series. Had it for about a year and couldn't get rid of it.
"Who the heck wants an old ford from a forgotten TV show!!!???"
They'd all say.
So I sold it to a guy from North Jerzy for $8500.00 who rolled it to someone in New York for 10K who rolled it to production for 25K.
After the film, EVERYONE was calling me asking to pay 30K for the car.
Would have been nice to hang on to this one for a little longer.

Delorean would be cheaper and easier. Be sure to look at the condition of the car and dont just buy the first one that comes along. There are always a few on ebay at a given time. Of course, the 89 is way cooler

RE: BTTF Delorean
The answer is, of course... a matter of personal choice.
But the fact remains, that a full-blown, spot on BTTF Delorean is HALF the cost of an 89 in crap shape.
Your wife will identify with that concept for sure.
Rusty...
The "Black Moon" like the "Wraith Interceptor" began life as a concept car, in this case, the "Beaujardin' Concordia II" after filming, I believe the car was returned to Beaujardin' which is why it hasn't appeared at any auto shows since.
I can tell you that that car is a personal favorite of mine, so you may see one on the street (or at least on the board) one day.
