Front Turbine Inlet

Ever notice that the bolts that holds the front turbine in place are going different directs? The top ones are going in and the lower ones are going out. Looks like button head allen head bolts and nylon lock nuts.

This info should come in useful for at least one person here. Dave thanks for the pix.

I think the shadow is just hiding it.

The shadow is hiding what? If I were you I would stay clear of the Lottery. Yep the top bolts are going in and the lower are going from the inside to the outside. Pictures don't lie...often.

I thought you were talking about where the turbine mount pads attach to the fiberglass shell. All three pads attach to the exposed fiberglass shell. I don’t think any would care which way the mount bolt are turned. Nuts should always be on the bottom unless otherwise specified.

Hey i know why the bolt heads are diffrent because there is a healey coilin those flanges and if you try to tap them out you get a little coil surprise in your hand.

That's because it is probably magnesium.

This is why I noticed the bolts.

I assume since the normal view of the turbine is a downward one, that it looked more streamlines to have the heads showing and not the nuts. So when you look at the front you see the heads on the top and on the bottom.

RE: Front Turbine Inlet

As a jet engine mechanic, there are requirements for orienting bolt heads so they face upward. So in the case of a nut coming loose the bolt itself will theoretically stay put. So an engine spinning at 15,000 rpms, its less likely to come apart but who’s to say!

Now the picture shown seems like the way it should be done by industry standard. But I do not know for sure as for this particular jet engines design.

Kevin, what powerplants have you worked?

What about Jack?

I myself work on GE F101 engines from the B-1. They are old but very effective. The first in the family line of GE's "common core" engines.

J79GE-15 on F-4 E,D,G Wild Weasel

F117A & F-16 GE and PW the PW were a shit engine.

During Desert Storm we changed 2.5 engines a day over a seven month period.

The F4 folks in the shop really love their bird. It was their favorite. Then came F-16s then the B-1s. Now we have tankers but work B1 motors for another base.

The F-4 was my first love, it was a great fighter, and it was rare that we lost a crew in an F-4.
I was a long time before we recovered an F-16 crew. In the early years we lost a lot of F-16's and crews when they first came into service.

The old F4 J79 would stay in a Jet for a year or two before coming out for maintenance.
If the F-16A-B model PW engine would last a week you were doing good.

My dad was an F4 Rio in the Marines and he has a lot of great stories about the crap F4's the Marines got. BUT they did like the thing. Personally I think it's a tougher/cooler looking jet than most of the 16's and up.

I have only taken one a part . It was a 1989 batmobile turbine thingy. I know of no others except for John Evans crew that have done this.

I hope to paint these parts this weekend. I have a special paint process planned and we'll see how it turns out.
